B-Rant- submitted by b-team on 04/17/2007Who Decided This Was A Good Thing? No parking in front of the house after midnight. More and more towns are adopting this reg, including our town. We can park in front of our house as long as we want during the day -- when the street is most busy, filled with the most traffic, and when a parked car would cause the most interference. But after midnight, when nobody is driving, there is no traffic, and when a parked car would have zero impact (in fact no one would even know the car is parked, except the police who relentlessly patrol the streets for just that reason), we're not permitted to park on the street. It's a riddle. Because the regulation says so, we're told. What it is. If it wasn't, the regulation would say something different, no? Still, what it is is silly, irrational, counter-intuitive, and definitely not a good thing....read more rants My town has the same things. - submitted by Anonymous on 04/17/2007
My town has the same things. It's insane. We've argued with the town wise men, but nothing has changed. It's so nutty. In our town, northern - submitted by sofrustrated on 04/17/2007
In our town, northern Maryland, it's out of control. They start ticketing at 12 or 1 a.m., so if you have visitors over or are having a party, you have to call the police department and "ask permission" if they can stay on the street for an extra hour or 2. Every time we do it, I feel like an infant. Can we please keep our car out for another 1/2 hour, sir. We asked the town council - submitted by inquiringmind on 04/17/2007
We asked the town council for an explanation and they literally said, we don't know, but it's been on the books for a long time so it must make sense. Good government! Our regulation kicks in at 1 - submitted by Anonymous on 04/17/2007
Our regulation kicks in at 1 a.m. Most of us ignore it, even the police. Everybody recognizes it's crazy. Like you say why would they care if we're on the street at the time of day when no one is using the streets. Our police are nutjobs about - submitted by soomer on 04/17/2007
Our police are nutjobs about enforcing this reg. It was repealed a few years ago, then the mayor decided it should be put back on. Something about a fire emergency hazard issue. It sill makes no sense. But there are bigger things worth fighting for even though it is annoying. I'm leaving both our cars - submitted by Anonymous on 04/17/2007
I'm leaving both our cars out tonight as an experiment. Civil disobedience or something. I want to see how long it will take for the police to issue tickets. Tonight, tomorrow. We'll see. I agree the rule is crazy. money . tickets. - submitted by Anonymous on 04/21/2007

Bunch of us protested to our town board about this law. One of us had been fined $500+. They wouldn't budge but they did agree to reduce the fines a lot. Cars late on street - submitted by DHBuckley on 04/22/2007
It is 2 to 6 am in my town, Maplewood, NJ. The traditional reasoning is crime deterrence--if the police see a car parked late they are motivated to pay attention due to the obligation to check if the plate is on that nights ok list, the bad person list or write a ticket. There are also no cars to rob from/steal and I suppose the emergency services argument probably has some rationale. Another thing I think is that the inevitable few inebriated souls don't have parked cars to hit--probably not something a municipality would discuss but makes some sense. Park well, all. David i'm in northern nj, around - submitted by jeff on 04/23/2007
i'm in northern nj, around ridgewood, and i know what David is talking about. Still, it seems like overkill. If a person wants to risk his car getting stolen, seems to me it hsould be up to him. And if a drunk driver is going to hit my car at night, better to police the bars and drunk drivers. My view is each town should - submitted by carexpert on 04/23/2007
My view is each town should have a right to set their own rules. If enough people in a town thinks the rule is stupid, they should pressure or vote out the officials who are maintaining it. Personally, I don't think they're necessary. We're in a town outside Philadelphia. We've got low crime and, as far as I can tell, few drunk weekday drivers. We pushed the town board to eliminate the law, and they finally did. I agree it's a silly reg, - submitted by Learner on 04/23/2007
I agree it's a silly reg, but i'd rather have our town focus on more important stupid laws. Like the one that says we can only leave out 2 garbage cans of garbage a week for pick up. My family is twice is big as my next door neighbor's. Should it be balanced? Instead our garage gets filled up with rotting garbage and becomes a health hazard. Not good for us or the community. the only cars that should be - submitted by Anonymous on 04/23/2007
the only cars that should be allowed on the streets are bmws and mercedes. that way we could specifically direct drunk drivers to those streets and watch them get it. the town could charge an audience fees which would replace the overnight parking fees. Money - submitted by Anonymous on 10/18/2007
It's 100% about raising revenue for the city. Nothing more. Nothing less. |
