Who Needs Swim Clubs?

Trend

Personal Yard Fountains. That's the latest "hot" home remodeling ask, according to builders and developers, says HGTV. Everybody now wants a stone fountain outside their front door or a faux-pond with real fish and turtles and other wildlife.

If the real creatures can't survive, no problem -- fake plastic frogs, lizards, even alligators will do just fine.

The new pond may be the size of a manhole cover, the fountain as grand in scale as a middle school water fountain gone amok, but...Size doesn't matter.

What matters is homeowners in all income ranges now want water. Splashy, fun, refreshing water. The thinking: If those rich folks in their mansions can have guilded fountains all over their estates, so can we...even if our water structures take up our entire yards and, if necessary, even parts of our livingrooms.

Fountains on small yards

Fountains on small yards look stupid. They're bad on big ones too. Why do people need these symbols of wealth?

I've been trying to avoid

- submitted by designer on 05/23/2007

I've been trying to avoid this trend with my clients. Agree, these design elements look incongruous on smaller properties. But it's true everybody seems to want to have what the richer have. But it's also true that these elements are ugly even on larger lots.

I do what my clients tell me but they know I believe they're committing design suicide.
