B-Rant- submitted by b-team on 06/12/2007Yard Sales... Shouldn't They Be Illegal?Yard Sales. A lot's been written about how to find the best yard sales, how to find "bargains" you never dreamed possible. Here's our take -- Burbia's best advice on how to deal effectively (rationally) with yards sales in your neighborhoods. First, ask the only reasonable question: Don't most towns have dumps for this kind of stuff? Yes. They do. And that should guide your next steps (which almost certainly will lead you directly away from the yard and back into your car). If, against your (OK, our) better judgment, you proceed into the yard sale, here are the keys: Burbia 3-second rule: If you look at the stuff on sale and your first visceral reaction is, incinerate or kindling, all subsequent reactions are invalid, actually psychotic, and you should flee the sale ASAP. In all events do not buy that aquamarine porcelain thing in the shape of an oversized gall bladder with the crack down the middle that you're thinking looks kind of "interesting" and might really make a good table lamp base. It won't. You're going to regret it. Your spouse-partner is going to laugh and then scream and possibly cry, and you're only going to have to leave it out in front of your house next week for the garbage people to cart away (at an extra cost for oversized electrical items in the shape of human internal organs). Coming soon to B-Rant: Garage Sales. Are they any different or better than yard sales (hint: no); and, if stuff is on sale in parts of the garage and parts of the yard, is it a garage sale or a yard sale? . . . ...read more rants Thanks for the advice. - submitted by Anonymous on 06/12/2007
Thanks for the advice. Normally I buy all the gall bladder shaped items I can. Funny. I'm having a yard - submitted by seller on 06/12/2007
Funny. I'm having a yard sale this weekend. I'll make sure all my dopey neighbors don't read this, until the sale's over. LOL I'm looking for broken - submitted by Anonymous on 06/12/2007
I'm looking for broken rusted roller skates and will pay top dollar. I'd also like to get a ceiling fan that has only 1 fan piece and the motor's missing on. Our neighbors had a garage - submitted by stopnow on 06/12/2007
Our neighbors had a garage sale a few weeks ago. The best stuff they were selling were their kids old torn sneakers. We didn't go, and most of our neighbors didn't. And now the seller neighbors are angry at all of us. Why? Because we chose to ignore their attempt to get us to pay $50 for a book case worth pennies? Grow up, you know? If you want to sell your crap, go ahead. But don't expect your friends to buy it. It's insulting and infuriating. garage sales should be - submitted by Anonymous on 06/12/2007
garage sales should be illegal. you want to sell your garbage, sell it to your own family. it's all crap, crap. Our former friends & - submitted by Anonymous on 06/12/2007
Our former friends & neighbors had a sale and nobody bought anything. They were upset, not talking to friends, complete babies. They then decided to give it all away, but the thrift shops and salvation army and other places that want stuff for the disadvantaged wouldnt take anything. Not a single thing! I don't know about banning yard sales. But I've never been to one where almost all the items offered aren't garbage. I've also heard many stories of neighbors not talking to each other after, broken friendships. It's not worth it. there is nothing wrong with a yard sale - submitted by Anonymous on 06/12/2007
Our cub pack holds a yard sale every year to help raise funds and it is a big hit - they are great for young kids clothing that normally costs way too much for how long they are going to wear it - just don't try to sell the broken down garbage. Rule of thumb - if you would not buy it why would any one else I agree some yard sales are - submitted by smartgurl on 06/12/2007
I agree some yard sales are OK and kids clothing can be OK. Good rule of thumb about not selling anything you woldn't buy. problem is, if you're trying to get rid of it in your sale, doesn't that mean you probably wouldn't buy it? Not always, but that's my problme with yard sales. Some are good - submitted by wendalina on 06/12/2007
When my Mom died I had to clean out an 11 room house. She was a lawn sale junkie. Maybe that is where I get it. Mom had so much stuff that I just turned around and had a sale. What I did not sell I let people go through things and help themselves or if they knew who else needed something I had. This stuff was not junk. My brother and I gave furniture away to people who needed it. My Mom's couch cost $1400 when new and it was 3 yrs old. We gave it to a family member that helped with cleaning of the house when we were having a get together. BUT we threw alot out. Our step father saved everything. We rented a dumster and when it was filled it was 1.67 TONS and that did not included the metal, wood and chemicals that were taken care of at the recycle center. When I took the rest of the stuff to the Salvation Army, they were very happy for the stuff. I had washed everything and also given new clothing and shoes that did not sell. But I do know that there are alot of people have sales that all of the stuff should be put in the dumpster and they need to have their brains looked at. When we do have a sale we price everything real cheap because we want to get rid of the stuff not have a business. We also will dicker with the price! Some towns do not allow them only to have a townwide sale. Thats the way to go!! i think sales like - submitted by Anonymous on 06/13/2007
i think sales like wendilina's are good. it's nice to see someone who's sensitive about what's being sold, unlike with so many sales which are junk dumps. my neighbor tried to sell old magazines and newspapers. i think he felt it would be easier than leaving it out for recycling. that's the kind of sale that should be banned. he was surprised when no one bought them. some people....... depends - submitted by Anonymous on 06/13/2007
There is a world of difference between an estate sale and a yard sale......estate sales often have decent old tools and/or kitchen utensils that are great starters for young poeple or to put in a vacation home. Yard sales tend to be 99.9999999% crap. Estate Sale v. Yard/Garage Sale - submitted by Buyer and Seller on 06/13/2007
I was an antique dealer for a while and when I wrapped up the business I sold the remaining inventory at "yard sales" (but also advertised that I was selling antiques). During the first 2 sales I had trouble keeping people out of boxes while I was still trying to set up, so I was surprised when the last sale started out slow (by comparison). Then people started showing up saying that they had just come from an "estate sale" up the street, but had been disappointed to find it was just a typical yard/garage sale, and mostly junk at that. They said they had expected the items to be more like what I had for sale. The point is many people will advertise an "estate sale" when they are just having another yard/garage sale, in the hope that it will draw more buyers. It doesn't matter what you call it, if you sell things worth buying, its worth the trouble of having the sale. If its junk, don't bother (it wastes your time and the buyer's time). My last, and smallest, sale gave me back a little over $3,000 in just 2 hours - then it was all gone except for one small box. And, since I was selling at my cost or less, there were a lot of very happy people leaving my place. Estate, yard, and garage sales can all be great sources for unexpected treasures or sought after items. While I love (authentic) estate sales, I have also purchased many quality items from people at yard/garage sales who either didn't know, or didn't care about the value of what they were selling. The bottom time is: Yard and garage sales are usually more time consuming (you often walk away with nothing), but can yield great and even amazing bargains; estate sales (real ones) are usually easier, with more quality items for sale, but the prices will probably be higher, although you can still make some awesome purchases. Besides providing things to sale or buy it also adds to community spirit. You may talk to your neighbor or even a stranger and enjoy the moment. Also think about the walking exercise you get in going places to places. And you may see a new item and learn some thing especially if you are not of American background. Happy Saturday Morning!!!! Garage sale is an American phenomenon and it is here to stay! Jay IT IS OK - submitted by Anonymous on 06/13/2007

yard salesd are awesome if you want to get size 14 mismatched mocasins. appreciate many people use 2nd hand stuff but the neighbors ought to give it to the needy instead of charging silly amounts to friends. Just got back from a yard - submitted by shopper on 06/16/2007

Obviously estate sales are different. There you can get OK stuff since it's not the worst of peoples' stuff being discarded. Only time I ever got something good at a yard sale was by mistake. The owner left and his kid or somebody stupidly thought a great almost new stereo was for sale. I bought it for like 50$. When the owner came back he was enraged. He offered to buy it back from me for $200. It was probably worth 400$. Guess what I did? I've gone to too many. Once - submitted by yardsaler on 06/16/2007
I've gone to too many. Once in a blue moon I've found something nice but, if I tallied up all the time spent and gas $ I could've probably taken my whole family to Hawaii for a month for the value I got. yard sales = junk sales = - submitted by truthier on 06/18/2007

I find stuff at yard sales and sell them on ebay. I just sold a toy for 24 dollars that I paid 1 dollar for, but i do run into some yard sales that sell crap and want retail value for old and broken items. |
