Things I Learned At The Apple Store

By M.B.Darden

I stopped by the mall the other day, mainly to pick up a pair of sneakers my wife had ordered. (That's another story, shopping -- even picking up things -- for the wife. It rarely ends well.) Anyway in the mall, I passed an Apple Store. It had recently been renovated, and I had never been there. (In fact, I'd never been in an Apple Store anywhere.)

I went in. First, I'm not a techie or a remotely skilled computer user. I have no strong feelings about Apple. I went in without preconceptions. I went in really to avoid leaving the mall -- it was freezing out & snowing & I was hoping (dreaming) that a few minutes later it would be a lot warmer and not snowing.

Here's what I think I learned or observed or concluded on my first trip to the Apple Store...

1. Michael Dell & Other Consumer PC-Makers: It's Over. Apple Has Won
It may not show up in the numbers, but it will. And the stock price? (Apple's lower than before but way higher than most.) How do I know it's won? I don't. But in my own twisted version of Buffet's maxim -- you learn most about a company through first-hand experience -- a few quick observations....

  • It was bitter cold, snowing. The mall was quiet. You could actually hear the water streaming from the marble fountain a floor away. But the Apple Store was packed with people--folks laughing, banging keyboards, sampling the rows of gleaming computers and gadgets, like they were in a high tech Disney World fun park. And there were no give-aways, no store discounts; just another (frigidly cold) day at the mall.
  • These people were not like me--i.e., lazy, biding their time before facing the cold. The lines at the cashier were 10-15 people deep the whole time. People were buying.
  • For God sakes, people were lining up -- waiting time, 22 minutes -- to get a seat in the Apple "lounge" at the back of the store. What was special there? Nothing. A chance to sit, read some magazines, drink coffee and sample some computer stuff.
  • At least 4 people told Apple Geniuses (i.e., sales people) they've used Dells over the years, hadn't considered Macs, but now wanted Macs. These were the 4 I heard, in a few minutes; how many more were there?
  • Three people -- moms -- approached Apple store managers to ask how their kids could become Geniuses. The managers laughed. Their answer: Get in line, there's an application list the size of Montana. The moms did get in line, and signed up their sons.
  • Think the store's only for teen geeks? (I did.) The people playing were of all ages. Some looked barely 14; others not younger than 70. You have a product or place that teens & geezers both want...you've got a f***ing business!

2. Apple "Geniuses" Are Chick Magnets
Nearly half of them were surrounded by babes almost out of central casting. Local high school or college girls (indie film arty, casual-chic, cool, smart) who couldn't seem to get close enough to them. And the Geniuses, many shy on the surface, were soaking it up. Favoring the girls-women, laughing charmingly and forcing the less hot women (and the guys) clamoring for help to wait.

3. Apple Geniuses Are In Fact Geniuses
Tech geniuses? I have no idea. Sales geniuses? Absolutely. Maybe that's 1 of Jobs' secrets. Get some geeky guys (most Geniuses are guys) who kind of look like the wind might blow them down (but who are in fact "animals"); set them in a store of largely ignorant but open & "monied" tech shoppers & let them "go." I saw a couple Geniuses sell hard core pro-level computers to a couple marks -- guys in rich leather jackets -- who came in looking for low budget notebooks. Another guy who came in just to look around, within minutes was reduced to a quivering near-desperate state-of-the-art desktop buyer. I don't know how they do it exactly -- they are selling stylish, hip-looking and extremely appealing products! -- but they're masters.

4. Bridging The Generation Gap May Be Possible, After All
Gen X, Y, Z, O, whatever. Middle aged geezers were yukking it up with their Geniuses. Hitting keyboards like Herbie Hancock, discovering with joyful amazement invisible cameras embedded in the monitors--slapping backs, laughing. Even the too cool Geniuses seemed to be having some fun. A few cross-generational pairs were fathers and sons. Teens actually showing their dads how to use stuff, acting impatient, sometimes in disbelief at their fathers' stupidity; but also getting a kick out of it all, actually communicating. Apple as a long-needed parenting tool? Probably not. But showing the "art" of the possible in communication? Maybe...

5. Starbucks, Don't Get Too Cocky
Starbucks is retrenching, closing stores in the U.S. (Dell, of course, is closing all its stores.) But that line in the back of the Apple store, for a seat and coffee and magazines? It reminded me of Starbucks a decade or 2 ago. I went back there. I confess: I waited in line. The coffee was great. The chairs were comfortable. The people were relaxed, having fun. Add some muffins and a few other items and, who knows, Apple could sell coffee and style too. (What does Starbucks know about music and books? Nothing, a few years ago. Now they're selling merchandise like the neighborhood Barnes & Noble.)

6. New Best Place To Furnish Your Home
It sounds ridiculous (OK, I'm only 1/4-serious). But, step aside Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Ikea. The chairs in the back of the Apple Store were among the most comfortable I've sat in. No wonder no one wanted to leave, and the wait when I left had grown to 45 minutes. Want a new living room? Go to Apple, check out the sofa manufacturers and you're done. If you buy a new Mac, who knows, maybe Apple will throw in its corporate furniture discount.

7.Black (In fashion) Is Back
Actually, not entirely. Black as cool went out in the 90s. But thanks to Steve Jobs' evident unwavering commitment to black -- there was a photo of him in the store, wearing the black turtle-neck thing you often see him in -- it may make a more formal fashion comeback. All the store managers were in black and some of the Geniuses. They looked silly - the Jobs uniforms; like, what the f***, anyone tell you the 90s are over, you can dress in colors, even white? But by the time I left I was thinking, you know what, I liked my black turtlenecks back then, I'd probably like them now. They were simple, they went with everything; and, most important, when they got dirty, no one could tell.

8. I'm A Lot Less Savvy And Smart Than I Thought
OK, I'm an idiot, a near retard with no self-control. You know that guy I mentioned above, who went in with no intent to buy anything but just to chill? I was that guy too. But after relaxing in the lounge, I approached one of the Geniuses, just to ask a few questions. I told him I'd been buying Dells for the past 12 years. He laughed. (Not a cheerful laugh, a disdainful laugh.) He showed me this "basic" desktop system with a 24-inch monitor whose images looked more vivid than my new Sony HDTV flat screen TV. I told him I just bought a new desk top 6 months ago and it did everything I needed it to do. He said, what do you need it to do? I said, basically, Word, Excel, surf the net, etc. He said, you have no idea how much you could be doing. (He said this with a straight face and, while part of me wanted to smash that face for its pretentiousness, another part was intrigued, eager...Of course I wanted to do more, who doesn't?)

He said, "this" system--iMac 2.8GHz--was the least I should be using &, unlike my current system, it would last at least 2-3 years (a lifetime today). And it only cost $2300, he said.

I had gone to the mall to pick up my wife's sneakers. I had no need for a new computer -- I thought. It would be crazy to buy this thing. But the Genius, seemingly already abandoning me, was playing with some images and videos on the screen, simultaneously interweaving them, then dragging stuff from one section to another...and it was so...cool, beautiful. It looked so...fun.

When I got home, and I hauled the boxes into the den, my wife simply shook her head. Then she made a few critical comments -- of course, she didn't understand. Then she asked where I put her sneakers, I probably left them in the car.

I said no, I didn't; I reacted indignantly. I hadn't left them in the car. I hadn't picked them up at all. Sneakers? Who gives a crap about sneakers when you can get a computer system that has everything built into a massive -- yet light -- monitor that displays images more brilliant than I'd ever seen and which, I was almost certain, my friend Jack's son (14, going on 25) would be in awe over. And, I thought, if I play my cards right, I could probably get the brat to come over and actually download some of those games he and his friends are obsessed with and, you know what, are going to look damn good on my new computer.

I went back to the mall a few hours later; I got the sneakers. And, definitely Jack's kid was psyched to come over. The challenge, Jack said, was going to be to get him to leave. As for my next trip to the Apple Store? I'll give it some time. Although now that I think about it, my notebook is pretty heavy, and the ones at the store looked awfully light and easy to carry. And I know there's been a lot of criticism of the new feather-weight MacBook Air, but it is really light and it's unbelievably thin and it looks pretty cool, and...did I say that it looks really light?...

The only reason...

- submitted by Ian Eisenberg on 02/12/2008

I would call the author an idiot is because he forgot the shoes his wife sent him for. Remember the number one rule when bringing home ANY electronic device that we buy because it triggers our male genes is to APPEASE THE WOMAN!

On all the other points made by some of the idiotic posters here (who don't have the guts to post a name or even a handle), most of you have no idea what you are talking about. There is so much tripe posted here it is easy to see that almost none of you actually have experience with a Mac and therefore your opinions count for naught. Price, UI, software, yadda yadda... all the same old arguments that have been debunked on any number of other sites.

I've been using Macs and PCs

- submitted by Anonymous on 02/12/2008

I've been using Macs and PCs for the last 25 years, and the more I use Windows, the more I love using Macs.

I could go on talking about ease of use, stability, the insecure spaghetti code behind Windows, overall security, how Microsoft has continually stifled progress in the computer world using illegal/monopolistic tactics (they are the true "fascists"), longevity, not having Redmond continually check my validity and control my computer from 3,000 miles away, a bumper crop of Vista issues... Vista is a failure and XP is almost ten-year-old technology: shouldn't computing be about the future rather than the past? Microsoft is all about proprietary, inferior formats and bullying.

It always amuses me when I see those TV ads by Microsoft and how they encourage kids' creativity. Microsoft and creativity? An oxymoron.

*sigh*

Well sorry about all the naysayers. You'll learn to tune them out and write them off as morons in due time. Forgive them they know no better. Enjoy your new computer while the others enjoy fixing theirs.

Comment Quality...

Interesting to see the neanderthal quality of the pro PC comments versus the lucid comments from the Mac folk.

Make me think that homo-sapiens is going to see the extinction of the Neanderthal one more time!

RE: haha

- submitted by Anonymous on 02/12/2008

You have to be kidding me. You have "banned" customers from your store because they are Mac users.

OK, so if you sell them the correct RAM (got on the web to check which type of RAM you need for which system, it's called customer service) and you won't have problems. Any enclosure that uses USB2 or FW will work with the Mac (again do some research and offer good customer service).

You are selling commodity hardware and unless you start stepping up in the customer service area I imagine you will be looking for a new place of employment soon since your place will be out of business (CompUSA anyone?)

lol

- submitted by madgunde on 02/12/2008

LOL, I love seeing all the ignorant PC ignoranuses bad mouth Apple, Macs, Mac users.

FACT: Windows is shit.

FACT: Mac OS X isn't.

FACT: Most Mac users have used both extensively, and made an informed decision. Most Windows users haven't. Even the ones who say they have, they really haven't. They know nothing about Macs and thus speak from a position of ignorance. They base their entire view of the Mac on their experience using one for 20 minutes 10 years ago. Time to wake up and realize Macs have changed. A LOT.

Here's some other facts that should help bring these ignorant PC bigots up to speed so they don't make themselves look so stupid next time: - Macs have a right-click. They also have USB ports and work with ANY USB mice and keyboards. - Macs can run Windows, so can play all the same games as a similar PC. Yes, that's right, Macs use Intel processors now, thanks for paying attention. - Macs are very price competitive with equally equipped Dells (if not cheaper), but the Dell is twice the size and weight and has a battery that lasts half as long.

Mean people

I'm surprised at the hugh number of mean people that are attracted to Widows. As an owner of Microsoft, I wonder why. Then I realize that our Steve B. isn't a very good role model. Time for new leadership. Can't wait for the next stockholder's meeting!

I enjoyed the article. I am glad you took the time to craft a well written description of your experience- kudos. And glad you got a mac, hope you are enjoying yours as much as I have mine over the last 13 years. Thanks!

The sort of people that

- submitted by Anonymous on 02/12/2008

The sort of people that still use windows OS are the ones that are in denial.

Lets face it, apart from the amount of games there is no reason to use windows anymore...

And, If you are just using your windows pc for games then boy are you idiots - go get a games console, its cheaper and better than a computer for playing games because it is designed for playing them!

Btw, I use a mac (2 infact), my company ONLY uses macs and most of our clients are switching over to macs.

So suck that!

Great article

- submitted by Anonymous on 02/12/2008

I have been in several Apple stores around the country and every experience has been similar to this.

The opinions about Macs and gaming are based on ignorance, not fact. Personally, I own five computers. Two of them are for gaming. My SLI rig has two 8800 Ultras and a 30" display (2560x1600). My MacBook Pro has one 8600M and a 17" display (1920x1200). With Bootcamp, I can play the same games on the Mac as the SLI rig. My frame rates are not quite as fast, but plenty fast. My Mac boots Vista slightly faster than the SLI rig, usually less than 20 seconds.

Everyone knows that a serious gamer wants an overclockable hotrod like my SLI rig. But for the casual gamer, the Macs with the nVidia GPUs will do just fine. All you need is Bootcamp (free with the OS) and an OEM license of Vista or XP (~$90).

Did you make an appointment first?

WTF?

- submitted by Sad for all those Windows folks on 02/12/2008

Geez, you Windows fans act as if someone slapped your mother (which you STILL probably wouldn't get as upset about).

Look, for anyone who's tried Vista or seen a blue screen of death, OS X is better. Are there things that can be improved? Yeah. Is it perfect? No, but what is?

I've seen my folks go through three Dells in 4 years. Hardware problems. Software problems. Peripheral problems. And simply "it got outdated really fast because we bought the cheapest one with the same hard drive." In that same time, they had one Mac Mini, which they still use every day and have never had a problem with. They're shopping now for an iMac.

It's like cars, and the comparison they always make. You can buy a V6 Dodge or a V6 BMW. One's a lot cheaper for the same engine, they both get you where you're going, but if you like automatic everything, XM Radio, Navigation, Leather, bluetooth, heated seats, roadside assistance, and free oil changes for life, your choice is easy. If you don't care about those things and just want to drive back and forth to work, buy the cheaper one.

Case in point? You'd never see a gateway or dell store ON 5TH AVENUE. It is a niche, but just like cars, a niche for people who want using it to be EASY AND COMFORTABLE, instead of cringing and praying every time they start it up.

But don't hate BMW drivers or Apple users because you chose something else. Macs have lived in the shadows for years, and whether you like it or not, people are switching -- whether you call them idiots or not or say that the framerate in Halo sucks, or scream about your lovely $599 Dell craptop.

Apple Stores are busy, and the cash registers are ringing. Dell couldn't even keep their kiosks open, much less entire stores.

No matter what else was said in the article, that last statement is FACT.

Comments are funny

- submitted by i, Jimbot on 02/12/2008

The comments on here are funny. The ones about not being able to right click; the ones about not being able to play games. All funny. What's really funny is that all new Macs can run Windows if you want them to. In fact, the new Power Macs have gotten rave reviews for being the best machines to run Vista. Those reviews are from PC mags.

Those that rant against Macs have probably not tried the Mac recently.

From one Mac user to another...

- submitted by mactricity on 02/12/2008

Your article is good and I think you'll really enjoy your new purchase. I would ignore most of the flames here, since they aren't worth your time. Mac users know they have a superior product than anything that has Microsoft on it. Linux users are a different breed and I respect them for having thrown off the shackles of Windows.

Windows users usually do not know what Windows lacks until they've actually spent time (serious, quality time) with a Mac.

So, welcome to the club! There is ALWAYS room for one more!

From a Mac evangelist...

- submitted by Anonymous on 02/12/2008

I enjoyed the article (and all of the rants from PCers). I too resisted all things Apple for years until I saw the light. Now I only use PCs at work (since I have to). If it's my time or my dime, Mac is all I'll have.

I've been very successful at winning over converts at work, as well. While nobody was interested in Mac four years ago, I've gotten several coworkers to switch and they are extremely pleased and vocal about the superiority of the Mac experience.

But, after reading some of the hate (small-minded, limited-vocabulary hate at that) in submissions here, I will say what I tell friends at work...

We don't want everyone, some of you should just keep your PCs.

Those of you who can't bear the thought of someone enjoying their new Mac experience seem to fall into two categories:

Ignorant, inexperienced, uneducated, low-income or adolescent hatemongers who clearly fear their own insecurity and inadequacies, or

Oops - based on the responders to this article, there is actually only one category.

Quite revealing...

- submitted by Anonymous on 02/12/2008

The vicious/insulting/misinformed comments and vulgar language spewed by the many pro-MS/Windows, anti-Apple/Mac posters certainly speaks volumes about mindsets and intelligence levels.

Thank God I'm not part of that small-minded community.

Choice is supposed to be a good thing as suggested by (and an advantage enjoyed by) the "PC" camp... unless, apparently, you choose something other than a Microsoft/"PC" solution.

Suggestion to some... chill out and grow up.

What can you say about a person who spends money on a computer that has more value, easier to use, has no viruses, can run Windows, MacOS and UNIX, and overall offers a better user experience...This is a smart person who has really done their homework and chose a Mac. What can you say about the rest..Well, their comments speak for themselves.

Mac's beat PC's Hands Down

- submitted by Major PC Employee on 02/12/2008

Yeah, I work for one of the top 2 PC manufacturers, and I've used both since their inceptions. The cycle tends to swing widely. In the early 80s, there was no Mac and the Apple II/+/e/c was of minor note. Once the Mac was introduced, it was the leading computer of the day. It wasn't until the mid-80s and Windows 3.0/3.1 did Microsoft catch up (oh, and BTW, Word was a GUI based software on the Mac LONG before it made it to Windows).

By the late 80s it was a race, but Apple fell behind because of the PC clones. When Apple let Jobs go, it really started to go down hill. By the 90s the Mac was all but a memory. The Windows dominance was high and the Mac was on the way out. They did try to allow clones, but it was too little, too late. But, then Apple hired back Steve and things began to turn around. Now the pendulum has swung in the other direction.

Windows VISTA has been touted as the worst OS ever built, as well as a "chrome plated turd". Leopard, unlike all of the other releases, had some issues out of the gate, but nothing like Vista. Yesterday Apple released a HUGE patch kit to fix most of the issues reported with Leopard. They even provided new video drivers. At some point Microsoft will be as bad off as Apple was in the 90s (especially with Balmer running the show), but the question is, will it be able to pull itself back?

I completely understand the way Windows users are commenting. When you know that you are on the wrong side of the fence you can ignore that fact as long as most everyone else is there too. But when everyone, including the people that own the land there, tell you that you're on the wrong side of the fence, you start to get defensive toward the people on the right side. It's human nature. They don't want to admit they made a mistake. Especially if they recently bought into the Vista nightmare...

Entertaining Article

- submitted by Thorin on 02/12/2008

I thought it was an entertaining article, and a good description of the Apple retail experience. I use Macs and PCs, prefer the Mac by far. Have had a PowerMac G4 for 6 years. Never formatted or re-installed (ok I did upgrade from Jaguar to Tiger), never scanned for viruses, and it still boots in less than 20 seconds. I wonder how many of these hate-filled comments were posted from mommy's basement?

The word 'retarded' comes to mind

- submitted by Anonymous on 02/12/2008

Reading the above comments have almost rendered me speechless. I'm a long-time Windows user (since 1994; my first experience was with 3.1) and during these 14 years I've had viruses on FOUR occasions. I'm not a die-hard Windows fan - I've used Macs as well - but reading these comments I suddenly feel a strong urge to go on a rampage, killing all Mac followers and sticking their heads on poles along the road.

Firstly, you need to understand that your computer is just that - a fucking COMPUTER. It's not a wife, it's not a lifestyle, and it's not a friend. Dammit, I have nothing principally against Macs, it's the user base that is so incomprehensibly retarded. The fact that you continually refer to Windows systems as 'PC:s', as if Macs weren't really built on the same architecture. The way you always praise Jobs for his inventiveness and good taste, when all he really does is indoctrinating you poor morons so that you will swallow whatever disgusting load of steaming hot bullshit he feeds you, and then ask for seconds. The iPhone? Piece of crap that has a fancy screen - worthless as a phone, ultimately overpriced, helplessly uncustomizable. The MacBook Air? Thin. That's it - it's slow, overpriced, incompatible with even such basic stuff as USB memory sticks (because of the 'ingenious' design of the USB port), and it is completely dependent on you carrying adapters with you if you want to use it for anything else than wireless surfing or taking notes.

I remember when Apple made the switch from the G series processors to standard PC architecture. Overnight, the G5 went from being immensely supreme to being a thing of the past - suddenly, Intel processors were doing a lot more work in a Mac than in a 'PC'... which is just retarded, I'm sure you see why. See, it's these small things that make a fellow PC users so enraged. Why, dammit, WHY are you Mac people so incapable of realizing that YOU ARE USING A PC?

And to comment on some of the other bullshit - people feeling 'creative' can easily make music on a Windows machine. While some people will claim that Macs are better for this, they seldom make the connection between the fact that Macs are much more expensive than PC:s and that they carry more expensive sound cards out-of-the-box. I run Reason and Cubase on my Windows PC, using a special sound card from M-Audio. It works EXACTLY the way it would on a Mac - in fact I've used the exact same programs on OSX and the only difference is that they run better on a PC.

Also, saying that Apple are merciful for providing the iPod buyers with means for transferring music from their PC to their iPod, is like saying that GM are merciful for making cars that actually run on roads. Who the hell would buy an mp3 player that doesn't work? How mentally challenged are you?

To sum things up, I'm impressed by Apple's ability to turn unbiased people into religious fanatics. I find it sad that so many Apple users are at least as narrow-minded as the people they claim to be (that would be the 'PC' users). And reading this article first made me dizzy from the crappy contrast of gray text on white background, then made me afraid. How can people be so gullible?

Enjoy having your wallet raped.

Given the number of errors...

strain . . . strain!

Wow! Quite an impressive number of very upset and misinformed PC users commenting here! It's obvious that none of them really have used the modern Mac OS which is head-and-shoulders above the cluster-fsck'd Windows OS.

But they will continue in their deluded state because they have too much time and emotion wrapped up in their proprietary, secretive, unstable, irritating (confirm or deny), slow and anachronistic operating system.

Over the years I've seen one after another PC user who sounded EXACTLY like many of these PC Idiots, hating the Mac, making fun of me for using a Mac and wildly proclaiming they would NEVER use a Mac only to finally, eventually, actually _try one_.

It goes like this:

At first they hate it because it's not like Windoze and they regret the move.

Then they find something that works in a logical way that doesn't work that way in Windoze and they say, "coo!"

Then they start getting the hang of it and by the time a month has gone by they're hooked.

The final phase is when they start evangelizing to _their_ PC-bound friends about how great the Mac is and trying to convert everyone they know. Nothing worse than an ex-smoker, right? ; - )

Windoze has lost. The numbers don't bear it out yet, but the trend is clear and even if it wasn't, the clear superiority of the Mac OS by any reasonable standard over any Windoze OS will lead, one-by-one, to the Mac becoming a more dominant, if not THE dominant OS over the next decade.

Unless MS does something radical, like throw out all their old proprietary, glitchy spaghetti-code in favor of something like Unix at its heart, it will continue to see an erosion of its numbers year-after-year until Linux and the Mac reach a tipping point and Windows joins the Betamax . . . .

I switched to mac when I met my husband 4 years ago. A habit I formed was checking my computer daily for viruses, spyware, etc.....I was constantly troubleshooting my pc. I spent more time fixing it that using it for what I needed. I continue to check my mac daily. In the 4 years I have never had any issues. I have a 6 year old G3 and 5 year old G4 that run better than my PC did brand new and out of the box. I also have a G4 Powerbook and a Macbook. I will never go back to PC. For those who get so bent out of shape about which system is best. Seriously get over it. Life has more important things than which computer system is best. Use that energy and spent that time with your families. They love you and want to spend more time with you than your computer ever will. This is a humorous article with some good OPINIONS. Get a life.

Mac VS. PC

- submitted by Noodles Noodlemann on 02/12/2008

I think that the people who use PC's are afraid to consider Macs. They have invested so much time in learning to deal with all of its quirks that they are scared that switching to Macs will mean they will have to learn all sorts of tricks to make them work. The devil you know versus the devil you don't. The problem is, Macs are easier to use and don't get viruses. And most people who switch find that out quickly. And you can still run Windows if you want. And yes, PC's can probably do most everything a Mac can. But that's like saying a Yugo and a BMW are basically the same. One does things really well and the other doesn't. So, stick with PC's if you choose. You are the ones who are gluttons for punishment.

While it's true...

- submitted by Reasonable on 02/12/2008

While it's true that Mac users throw the term 'PC' around to describe Windows users, even though Macs use the same architecture these days, the term has been appropriated by both Apple and Microsoft and it's venders to describe the Windows ecosystem. So while technically you are correct that they are making an error, or are being uniformed, how can you blame them when you see all the marketing using the term to describe Windows.

As a case in point, Amazon.com and a large number of online and storefront retailers break down software into 'PC' and Mac categories. Seeing this large scale 'misuse' of the term merely goes to show that language is not static. The meaning has changed from being a specific hardware architecture to being the specific Microsoft/ hardware vendor coalition that sells Windows.

In regards to claims that all manufacturers are 'locked in' to Microsoft, Dell does sell computers that run Linux. They just don't publicize it much at all. From what I've heard, it is in order not to lose their deals with Microsoft supplying them with lower prices for Windows on their machines.

As for 'Right-click' and all the other assorted claims of lacking basic features, most of them were missing at one point, but for the most part they are all there, or can be with no or the same effort as required on a Windows machine.

Looking at the cost, as long as you are planning on owning a computer for the expected lifetime of a non-Apple consumer machine, it makes perfect sense to glare and warn people of the 'overpricing' that Macs suffer from. On the other hand, if you approach buying a computer from an expected life time of 3-5 years, _then_ buying an 'overpriced' Mac for $1-2k more than a comparable Windows machine makes sense. Apple these days offers a 3 year extended warranty for their products, and while some of their marketing is obviously just to get the extra $3-400 extra they make, it also goes to show that they are expecting to have to provide support for functioning machines that far down the line. This is a very different expected life-cycle between the two camps.

As to the article itself, I enjoyed it. It was a personal retelling of an interesting event that happened. The fact that it was seized on and linked to by the technocratic internet society, is I feel an unfortunate consequence of his topic.

Finally, I constantly see people in these kinds of bickering touting their years of experience using this or that system, or how many machines they have had to run as reasons why people should listen to them and not the others before them. This seems slightly silly. If your argument holds together, there should be no real reason to tout your own qualifications without giving some thought to what you are going to lend their support to.

However, I do recognize that without stating the aforementioned qualifications, I will be open to threats from both sides as to my lack of knowledge or judgement in this case. Therefore, I will say that I am a long term Mac user (10+ years) and that I used to count myself in the 'windowze' rabid Mac user camp for a long time. However, I have left that camp behind, and while I am still a Mac user and proponent, I'd rather use reasoning to discuss the subject. I can also realize that there may be very valid reasons to choose the Windows/ PC platform.

Last but not least, can we at least have the decency to spell-check our postings? You can even 'copy-paste' into TextEdit, or Word, or OpenOffice, or some other program that can spell check if your browser cannot.

Thank you again for the wonderful article. Enjoy your new computer.

Thank you, Reasonable, for your calm and wisdom. I love this site and it's the first time I've seen such craziness. I liked the article

I'm sorry you're being put down so much - I don't like that at all.

I think the way to counter all this hostility is to keep on using your beautiful machine, and if you've managed to create great things with it, like the salesperson said, then he was right.

If you haven't, if you make the same drab Word documents you always did, then perhaps your PC would have been fine.

Incidentally, if you want to do more beautiful documents and presentations, pick up a copy of iWork 08. (I think there's a free demo copy on your machine that you can try for 30 days). It's a lot of fun and very intuitive to create attractive styles, documents and presentations. This is especially true if you do any kind of PowerPoint-style presentations - Keynote will make beautiful presentations and impress all your friends.

I'm on a PowerMac G5 that I bought when it was introduced in 2003, so the salesperson is right - Macs have a much longer service life than PCs. My system runs the latest Mac software, including Leopard and Aperture, just fine. Try even thinking of running Windows Vista on a system more than a year old and you're in big-time trouble.

Enjoy your new Mac!
