Things I Learned At The Apple Store

By M.B.Darden

I stopped by the mall the other day, mainly to pick up a pair of sneakers my wife had ordered. (That's another story, shopping -- even picking up things -- for the wife. It rarely ends well.) Anyway in the mall, I passed an Apple Store. It had recently been renovated, and I had never been there. (In fact, I'd never been in an Apple Store anywhere.)

I went in. First, I'm not a techie or a remotely skilled computer user. I have no strong feelings about Apple. I went in without preconceptions. I went in really to avoid leaving the mall -- it was freezing out & snowing & I was hoping (dreaming) that a few minutes later it would be a lot warmer and not snowing.

Here's what I think I learned or observed or concluded on my first trip to the Apple Store...

1. Michael Dell & Other Consumer PC-Makers: It's Over. Apple Has Won
It may not show up in the numbers, but it will. And the stock price? (Apple's lower than before but way higher than most.) How do I know it's won? I don't. But in my own twisted version of Buffet's maxim -- you learn most about a company through first-hand experience -- a few quick observations....

  • It was bitter cold, snowing. The mall was quiet. You could actually hear the water streaming from the marble fountain a floor away. But the Apple Store was packed with people--folks laughing, banging keyboards, sampling the rows of gleaming computers and gadgets, like they were in a high tech Disney World fun park. And there were no give-aways, no store discounts; just another (frigidly cold) day at the mall.
  • These people were not like me--i.e., lazy, biding their time before facing the cold. The lines at the cashier were 10-15 people deep the whole time. People were buying.
  • For God sakes, people were lining up -- waiting time, 22 minutes -- to get a seat in the Apple "lounge" at the back of the store. What was special there? Nothing. A chance to sit, read some magazines, drink coffee and sample some computer stuff.
  • At least 4 people told Apple Geniuses (i.e., sales people) they've used Dells over the years, hadn't considered Macs, but now wanted Macs. These were the 4 I heard, in a few minutes; how many more were there?
  • Three people -- moms -- approached Apple store managers to ask how their kids could become Geniuses. The managers laughed. Their answer: Get in line, there's an application list the size of Montana. The moms did get in line, and signed up their sons.
  • Think the store's only for teen geeks? (I did.) The people playing were of all ages. Some looked barely 14; others not younger than 70. You have a product or place that teens & geezers both want...you've got a f***ing business!

2. Apple "Geniuses" Are Chick Magnets
Nearly half of them were surrounded by babes almost out of central casting. Local high school or college girls (indie film arty, casual-chic, cool, smart) who couldn't seem to get close enough to them. And the Geniuses, many shy on the surface, were soaking it up. Favoring the girls-women, laughing charmingly and forcing the less hot women (and the guys) clamoring for help to wait.

3. Apple Geniuses Are In Fact Geniuses
Tech geniuses? I have no idea. Sales geniuses? Absolutely. Maybe that's 1 of Jobs' secrets. Get some geeky guys (most Geniuses are guys) who kind of look like the wind might blow them down (but who are in fact "animals"); set them in a store of largely ignorant but open & "monied" tech shoppers & let them "go." I saw a couple Geniuses sell hard core pro-level computers to a couple marks -- guys in rich leather jackets -- who came in looking for low budget notebooks. Another guy who came in just to look around, within minutes was reduced to a quivering near-desperate state-of-the-art desktop buyer. I don't know how they do it exactly -- they are selling stylish, hip-looking and extremely appealing products! -- but they're masters.

4. Bridging The Generation Gap May Be Possible, After All
Gen X, Y, Z, O, whatever. Middle aged geezers were yukking it up with their Geniuses. Hitting keyboards like Herbie Hancock, discovering with joyful amazement invisible cameras embedded in the monitors--slapping backs, laughing. Even the too cool Geniuses seemed to be having some fun. A few cross-generational pairs were fathers and sons. Teens actually showing their dads how to use stuff, acting impatient, sometimes in disbelief at their fathers' stupidity; but also getting a kick out of it all, actually communicating. Apple as a long-needed parenting tool? Probably not. But showing the "art" of the possible in communication? Maybe...

5. Starbucks, Don't Get Too Cocky
Starbucks is retrenching, closing stores in the U.S. (Dell, of course, is closing all its stores.) But that line in the back of the Apple store, for a seat and coffee and magazines? It reminded me of Starbucks a decade or 2 ago. I went back there. I confess: I waited in line. The coffee was great. The chairs were comfortable. The people were relaxed, having fun. Add some muffins and a few other items and, who knows, Apple could sell coffee and style too. (What does Starbucks know about music and books? Nothing, a few years ago. Now they're selling merchandise like the neighborhood Barnes & Noble.)

6. New Best Place To Furnish Your Home
It sounds ridiculous (OK, I'm only 1/4-serious). But, step aside Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Ikea. The chairs in the back of the Apple Store were among the most comfortable I've sat in. No wonder no one wanted to leave, and the wait when I left had grown to 45 minutes. Want a new living room? Go to Apple, check out the sofa manufacturers and you're done. If you buy a new Mac, who knows, maybe Apple will throw in its corporate furniture discount.

7.Black (In fashion) Is Back
Actually, not entirely. Black as cool went out in the 90s. But thanks to Steve Jobs' evident unwavering commitment to black -- there was a photo of him in the store, wearing the black turtle-neck thing you often see him in -- it may make a more formal fashion comeback. All the store managers were in black and some of the Geniuses. They looked silly - the Jobs uniforms; like, what the f***, anyone tell you the 90s are over, you can dress in colors, even white? But by the time I left I was thinking, you know what, I liked my black turtlenecks back then, I'd probably like them now. They were simple, they went with everything; and, most important, when they got dirty, no one could tell.

8. I'm A Lot Less Savvy And Smart Than I Thought
OK, I'm an idiot, a near retard with no self-control. You know that guy I mentioned above, who went in with no intent to buy anything but just to chill? I was that guy too. But after relaxing in the lounge, I approached one of the Geniuses, just to ask a few questions. I told him I'd been buying Dells for the past 12 years. He laughed. (Not a cheerful laugh, a disdainful laugh.) He showed me this "basic" desktop system with a 24-inch monitor whose images looked more vivid than my new Sony HDTV flat screen TV. I told him I just bought a new desk top 6 months ago and it did everything I needed it to do. He said, what do you need it to do? I said, basically, Word, Excel, surf the net, etc. He said, you have no idea how much you could be doing. (He said this with a straight face and, while part of me wanted to smash that face for its pretentiousness, another part was intrigued, eager...Of course I wanted to do more, who doesn't?)

He said, "this" system--iMac 2.8GHz--was the least I should be using &, unlike my current system, it would last at least 2-3 years (a lifetime today). And it only cost $2300, he said.

I had gone to the mall to pick up my wife's sneakers. I had no need for a new computer -- I thought. It would be crazy to buy this thing. But the Genius, seemingly already abandoning me, was playing with some images and videos on the screen, simultaneously interweaving them, then dragging stuff from one section to another...and it was so...cool, beautiful. It looked so...fun.

When I got home, and I hauled the boxes into the den, my wife simply shook her head. Then she made a few critical comments -- of course, she didn't understand. Then she asked where I put her sneakers, I probably left them in the car.

I said no, I didn't; I reacted indignantly. I hadn't left them in the car. I hadn't picked them up at all. Sneakers? Who gives a crap about sneakers when you can get a computer system that has everything built into a massive -- yet light -- monitor that displays images more brilliant than I'd ever seen and which, I was almost certain, my friend Jack's son (14, going on 25) would be in awe over. And, I thought, if I play my cards right, I could probably get the brat to come over and actually download some of those games he and his friends are obsessed with and, you know what, are going to look damn good on my new computer.

I went back to the mall a few hours later; I got the sneakers. And, definitely Jack's kid was psyched to come over. The challenge, Jack said, was going to be to get him to leave. As for my next trip to the Apple Store? I'll give it some time. Although now that I think about it, my notebook is pretty heavy, and the ones at the store looked awfully light and easy to carry. And I know there's been a lot of criticism of the new feather-weight MacBook Air, but it is really light and it's unbelievably thin and it looks pretty cool, and...did I say that it looks really light?...

Apple

- submitted by James Reader on 02/14/2008

The Ipod is definitely shiny and undeniably popular. The MacBook Air is also very light, but not really my cup of tea. Apple makes some very nice products, this much is true. The thing that has always kept me away from Apple... their computers only have one mouse button. I don't know how to work with only one mouse button. I have suffered with PCs and windows since version 3.1. It's a love/hate relationship, but it has been a lasting one. I've also messed with various flavors of linux, and spent some time with a couple of Unix variants, but I have learned to enjoy windows. I honestly don't understand why people are so black and white and even hateful about PC versus Mac. Use what you like and let others do the same. Seems pretty simple to me.

One other thing that keeps me in the windows camp is the availability of games. In my experience, more of the games that I want to play are released exclusively for windows.

Just my two cents. ;)

One more thing...

- submitted by James Reader on 02/14/2008

I Run a Home built computer, with Vista, Defender disabled, firewall disabled, no third party anti-virus software, and I have not had problems. It's a simple matter of being careful where you go and what you do. God gave me a brain for a reason. I'd also like to say that I do have some gripes about vista, that same as I have with all previous versions that I have used, but the pros simply out weigh the cons for me. Who knows, one day I might spend enough time with a Mac to learn to like it, but for now Windows serves my needs quite well.

WOW... great article

Well I have to say I'm a little bit of an Apple Fanboi.. but these people who have slammed you on this are hilarious... they either can't read, or don't have a sense of humor or are starbuck/dell fanbois. I used to work at an apple reseller I understand your humor.. top work

wow...

- submitted by Stef on 02/14/2008

I cannot believe how some people have gotten offended by what the entire article says. He was saying that what he experienced in the store impressed him. Remember... this is HIS opinion... not yours. You don't get paid for yours... so... don't think that whatever you say has any positive effect on people using a PC.

Hooray for you, PC user, for knowing how to do anything you want to do on your PC. Have fun using XP... or Vista even... I work for Apple at one of the retail stores... if the PC is SO much better than a Mac, then how come 8 out of 10 of my customers are switchers? How come of those 8 people, 7 of them have flat out told me that they made the switch to Vista, and then went back to XP but still just want to throw their PC out the window? What's so f*cking great about a PC? Seriously?!?! I have used a PC. I hated every minute of it. I am now a full-blown Mac girl. I LOVE using my computer. I LOVE being on my computer and being creative with anything and everything I've ever wanted to do. I've never thought I could ever do some of the things I do.

As for people complaining about Leopard? WTF? You think Vista, or Linux is ANY better? Please. Who cares if it had some bugs in it when it FIRST CAME OUT.... the awesome thing about Apple... they fixed it. They actually listen to their customers. If they have people go and give feedback about things, they listen to them and make it happen. What other company has EVER done that? The fact that we, the employees, LOVE working there make that much of a difference when we are talking with the customers.

So... I just don't understand still why PC users will just bitch and complain about Apple and it's products when they themselves are thinking what they are using is far more superior. I've gone and custom made a computer online to what I want in a computer... yeah... that was SO much fun. What I wanted ended up being about $1500 more than a Mac... one of the "non-custom" products I might add.

As for as trying to figure out how do to anything on either a Mac or a PC? Sorry. Hands down the Mac wins with how easy it is to use, how easy and fast you catch on, how "user-friendly" everything is. You don't need a phone book sized manual to plug everything in, install, and use the programs. You just plug it in and go! How can you not LOVE that? Even the fact that you get software installed for you. If you custom order a Mac online, and you get some other software with is, it comes installed! Even the professional programs. How awesome is that?

So... before you, PC fanatic, go and start trash talking people who use Macs, or the products themselves... just remember. Everyday, people walk into the Apple retail stores. Everyday, people who hate their PC's come in and buy a Mac. So... if a PC is so much better than a Mac, how come the majority of Apple's customers are switchers?

Hey James... the thing you said about Apple only having one mouse button...

There are 3 actually. It's just seamless.

Oh yeah... you can also use whatever USB 2.0 mouse you want. Just thought I'd throw that in there for ya.

Credit where credit is due

A computer user for only 17 years. Started with DOS 3.3, moved on to Windows 3.1, then Win95 and 98 then to XP. Purchased an iMac 3.5 years ago and haven't looked back. INTUITIVE, PRODUCTIVE, and ENJOYABLE!!

I had to "mess" with Vista at work. What a horror show. Talk about wasting time.

People are comparing cost of the hardware: MAC vs PC's. Are you comparing getting all of the software that you get with the MAC?

Viruses? Ain't got no stinkin' viruses.

its a damn computer

microsuck windoze, nudepenguin? can you say lame? they're just computers, people. mac, pc, whatever. as long as it works and does what it needs to, it's the same as any other one. of course some things are gonna work better on other computers, but you're never gonna get THE PERFECT computer. get over it.

WOW

- submitted by Anonymous on 02/14/2008

LOL. It's funny how most of the people who say they hate Mac have never even used one! There are really no justifiable reasons to hate Mac. It's like saying you hate microwaves because they don't keep your food cold (gaming on a Mac).

hmmm

- submitted by Jonny T on 02/14/2008

hmmm ... whilst Apple have proved very popular and I imagine that you experience is not unique - Apple stores are busy places- there are some major problems with what you are saying, most of them already covered by the other people commenting on here.

I am a researcher and the first hing that struck me is that you have reached a very definitive and extreme conclusion 'Apple has won' from a sample size of .......... one experience. Trust me when i say that a sample size of 1 is not enough to draw conlusions from. Furthermore it is in no way conlusive. Some people see one thing they were not expecting, label it a miracle and decide that the Universe was created and ruled by some power they have never witnessed. This is not disimilar.

It is not to say that Apple won't 'win'. But what is the definition of 'winning' exactly, and for how long, in what market etc. We live in a fluid, evolving world where things change all the time - and we only witness a minute area in a minute time scale. Even shrinking the area to the western hemisphere of planet earth for the last 20 years shows that nothing is definate, and certainly not for any length of time. If you saw Microsoft at the late 80's early 90's you might conclude they have definately won. And whilst they have been phenominally successful markets change, as do the consumers, and as do the companies. We now, a few years later, see Microsoft - still HUGE and very very successful and powerful, but losing ground, losing trust and in some newer markets, not getting anywhere.

I could ramble on but I am bored and it will take a long time to explain everything I want to.

Summary - yes Apple store was very busy, they often but not always are, this is not conclusive of anything, especially based on one experince, even if they do continue their very successful streak (which I personally hope they do not) it does not mean they will be in the same place in 10 years ...

- submitted by Anonymous on 02/14/2008

I'm sorry, but this is really unacceptable. You thought I was talking about the article, weren't you? Nope. His opinion is his opinion. But all this negative crap is just shit. You guys, who just sit around and insult people, what are you? Has no one taught you self control? Or perhaps you just don't understand courtesy. it it totally unacceptable to be down on somebody. And who gives a running fuck if he's from the suburbs? I've been running a tech company for 30 years out of Sonoma. It's in California, by the way. And yeah, it's a suburb.

So go fuck yourselves or something, but don't be getting down on people for writing their opinion.

Gay

- submitted by Lectrick on 02/15/2008

You PC lovin weenies are acting like your best friend just went gay and is telling you how fucking awesome it is.

Macs win because they can run the sweet OS X AND windoze AND games for either OS, WITHOUT crap viruses or antivirus software and WITHOUT hours of (COSTLY IN TIME) weekly maintenance babysitting.

It is not your best friend going gay. It is simply better, take it or leave it.

nice article

- submitted by who cares what my name is on 02/15/2008

I liked it, course I am a college mac user and really like the fact that it doesn't have the super large monitor AND the tower AND the several wires it takes to make it work. I took my mac home over break and it was super easy! Wouldn't use anything else ever again. Why are some you complaining about the language he used, don't we read lots worse in the newspapers and see even worse on TV? Yes we do

Vistards

Just to let the ill-informed

- submitted by Sean on 02/19/2008

Just to let the ill-informed know. Apple employees DO NOT work on commission. On the basis of the whole Mac vs. PC debate, quality over quantity. I prefer a quality experience. The only thing I would ever use a PC for is gaming. I used to pay WoW (for the mac) and now own a 360 system which suites my 3-4 hours of gaming a week because Im not a fucking queer who sits on my ass and plays video games all day. I don't even EVER post comments but I truly wanted to get this off my chest. Fuck Windows I hate it.

Games

- submitted by Anonymous on 02/21/2008

If you want to play games buy a console. The only games that you need a PC for are games like world of warcraft that are not availiable on a console. It is however availiable for Mac... Oh and if you can run windows on a Mac why would you buy a PC?

Time to find a better neighborhood to write in.

- submitted by Anonymous on 02/25/2008

The Macintosh platform is finally getting its due after years of being in the shadow of the Microsoft regime, and the PC establishment on this blog can't stand it. Mr. Darden is probably better off leaving the burbs for this neighborhood has apparently gotten seedy, intolerant, and ignorant. Don't look back.

Apple Experience

- submitted by Mark Lamerton on 02/25/2008

I agree with Bill, above. The majority of PC users are ignorant because they've never used a Mac. I use a Mac at home and a PC at work (I have to) and have done for twenty years. PC's and the inevitable windows software that comes with them are a big pile of crap from a usability point of view. It's not the point that Macs and PC's can do the same thing, of course they can. The point is you actually enjoy the experience with a mac. Bill Gates and Microsoft have been responsible for "dumbing down" millions of PC users with their illogical, painful operating systems.

Loved the article and found the humor. Thanks!

Nitai,

"Everything your new Mac can do, a PC can do."

Well, I completely agree! However, everything that a PC can do, a Mac can not do. My Mac has never seen a BSOD, never locked up, never seen a Virus, never seen spyware, never had registry problems, never spewed files all over the place making it impossible to completely remove an App, doesn't need a bunch of freeware programs to keep it running correctly (SpyBot, Ad-Aware, Defrag, RegCleaner, etc...)(even though that's what you should have paid for when buying XP or Vista) and to me, that's worth the weight of my Mac in GOLD...

Thanks for helping me realize why I switched in the first place.

did someone mention developers?

- submitted by ChrisBassett on 02/29/2008

someone mentioned apples disregard for developers.

I was just wondering if whoever mentionedit knew about Apple giving away one of the best development environments there Is with every computer and copy of their OS?

Not to mention supporting and promoting open standards wherever possible. Or the massive effort they are going to to provide a development environment for the iPhone?

How about the fact that OS X is built on an open framework?

Now, I'm sure microsoft do their own thing too, and that it's equally valuable in some ways, worse in others and better in others.

Maybe mr jobs needs to sweat more and scream "developers" a few times before you'll take him seriously.

Wow, only four viruses?

- submitted by Plebian on 03/02/2008

Anonymous writes:

"I'm a long-time Windows user (since 1994; my first experience was with 3.1) and during these 14 years I've had viruses on FOUR occasions."

For context, anonymous is saying this as though it's a GOOD thing.

I've been using computers (of many different platforms) since around 1980. That's 28 years. I've NEVER suffered from a single virus. Of course, I have mostly avoided Windows.

Getting four viruses in only 14 years is a horrible indictment on your computing choices. Nothing to brag about at all.

What is the point

- submitted by Some Guy on 03/11/2008

I am not sure why everyone is arguing. I personally prefer PC's because of the ability to be able to run to the store and buy a random part to fix it if needed.

Personally its a choice of preference. I prefer functionality over cosmetic appearance. I know plenty of people who own only mac and I myself have used them on the job for 5 years now and for what I do PC's have always been more "functional" but who gives a damn anyway.

The PR (public relations) is kind of stupid (great marketing) in the sense they spread blatant lies but business is business. Plus Micro$oft does not really need bash apple anyway since Office:Mac is a multi-billion dollar product for them and more then 85% intel based mac buyers end up buying windows anyway cause NOBODY ever fully switches.

i would like to clarify, I

- submitted by Terian Flows on 03/23/2008

i would like to clarify, I havn't been a fan of MS since Windows Me. I started using PCs in 1996, while I was in school. i assembled/custom built my system to save money, and had to install the OS myself. I had to know how to maintain my machine myself. After going through this upgrade/reinstall cycle several times, I pretty much realised that there is no way Windows can be the best thing out there. I didnt know about Linux at he time. Now that I am older, however, I would choose Dell over a Mac any day. PC have a robust developer community, it not a brand, its an ecosystem, which is now thriving thanks to the FOSS crowd. Also, with PC, you can always look under the hood, use cheap parts, use duct if need be...Also, in my case, I never bought into the console game thing...I started playing video games during the nineties, when the better games were on the PC, like Red Alert and Star Craft. Now, I am too set in ways to change in that regard...Anyways,if a console game is any good, they will port it to the other formats, which includes PC (but not the Mac). Finally, there is the plain, commonsense reason why I will not choose a Mac. 2300 bucks for Mac? the top of the line Dell with the all the bells and whistle is not worth that much!! They will have to install warp drive or something to command such price. You have been had BIG TIME.

Don't you people have

Don't you people have anything better to do than talk about your computers? Try going out of your house and communicate with PEOPLE instead of your screen. There is a world out there - believe it or not for PC and MAC people. We can all get along in harmony!

PC Vs. Mac

Computers are stupid.

Buy an abacus.

WOW!

I work on computers for a living and I was so tired of spending my nights and weekends cleaning up the viruses, spyware, trojans on the family pc, that I thought I would check out the local Apple Store at South Coast Plaza. I have to agree with the author of this article. I am sooooooo pleased with the iMac we brought home, along with the FREE 8gig iPod Touch and the student discounts, we are all patting ourselves on our backs (the whole family)! I still have a windows pc here at home, but haven't turned it on since I got the iMac. I am gaining knowledge on the Mac OS now, rock solid Unix based Leopard, and guess what? I am having more fun playing and creating, and like the TV ads say, it runs Windows Office better than Windows does. My peeps, you will NOT REGRET getting a Mac.

Linux is superior to OS X

That is all

I LOVE MACS

- submitted by Anonymous on 10/26/2008

I now understand windows users. I used to live in a wealthier area where about 80% of the population was mac. Now I'm in a new town with all windows users. Almost all my friends with pc's only stay with them because there are more ways to get pirated crap over the internet. i.e. PORN! Whenever we talk about mac VS. PC they just go, "Macs are gay" and that is the only reasoning they will provide. So i say, take your viruses, you deserve them. My dad used to own a little company that some of you may remember, BBC computers. he believes macs have a much better written OS but are too costly. Also he doesnt understand all the controversy over mac vs. windows, he believes a computer is just a tool, no more than a hammer or saw.

I know this article is old

I know this article is old as are many of the comments, but I just HAD to say something about people who say "buy a game console for games"

Game consoles lack many good PC games. Do any of you even realize how ridiculous it would be to attempt to play a strategy game with a gamepad?

There are numerous PC strategy games that are not on ANY console and NEVER will be (Age of Empires, Hearts of Iron, Europa Universalis, Blitzkrieg, Galactic Civilizations, Starcraft)

Not to mention the fact that first person shooters on a PC are vastly different than on a console. Using a mouse and keyboard requires a whole different mindset and creates a very different gaming experience.

Oh, and did I mention RPGs??

You guys can go buy your 2300$ Mac and then turn around and spent $200 plus on a console. I'll get a computer for half of what the Mac costs which will do more AND play all of my games. Viruses? Don't go to porn sites and use free anti virus software. Oh yeah, and maybe with all that money I saved, I'll buy a new HDTV AND a new console to go with it.

Maybe that is the dirty little secret of the Mac world. Porn addicts buy Macs because they don't get viruses on them! (sarcasm)

Windows

- submitted by Anonymous on 12/23/2008

I use windows Vista currently and have used all previous windows OS's up to this point. I have also used mac's before. I, however, have not had a single security issue with any of my windows OS's i use only free anti-virus and spyware programs. I use the myspace, facebook, mainstream websites daily. I download music etc. And yet using my free programs have not had any security problems at all. Also i have never had any data loss with my windows system. If you manage your folders that contain your data properly, windows does not just destroy them. Only at the users fault would this occur. In closing anyone who says windows has tons of security issues must not use anti-virus programs or check for viruses at all on their computers. Windows rocks!!
