You ain't got nothin' on Karin Weisburgh, a 53-year-old mother of two who has been biking to work from Larchmont, New York, to Yonkers, New York (ten miles each way) for the past 23 years. Weisburgh, a research analyst for Consumer Reports, was recently named "Bike Commuter of the Year" by the Westchester [County] Cycle Club. She clearly deserves it. She's been hit by cars five times, including one time by an elderly fellow who, after running Weisburgh down, asked: "Is this the way to New Jersey?"...Learn about more heroes. commuter award... - submitted by Christy on 09/11/2008
My boyfriend cycles from Spencer, IN to Bloomington, IN on weekdays - 18 miles each way. Only for a year, though. Hasn't been hit, though has hit a pedestrian. He computed the costs of gas and driving vs. the bicycle purchase (a Long Haul Surly) and maintenance (that adds up too) and figured that he started saving money at 5000 miles, or 7 months. |
