- added on 01/20/2009 Scarlet Letters (or Badges) For Senior Drivers? Well, it's about time somebody formally acknowledged the obvious: Senior citizen drivers pose heightened risks -- to themselves & others -- while cruising the streets. And, if nobody wants to ban them from driving, at least put the public on notice to pay particular attention to (i.e., get the f**k out of the way of) cars driven by the senior brigade.
According to a recent piece in Inventorspot-Japanorama, that's exactly what Japan did -- now requiring its seniors over 75 to place visible badges on their vehicles, letting everyone know of the possible issues (i.e., horrors) they'll encounter if they get too close (i.e., within a square mile). Sure, many seniors aren't happy -- it's not exactly a badge of honor -- but if they were allowed to decide everything, seniors would be permitted to drive unfettered until they reached 120 or death, without any eye or other testing of any kind. Oh yea, that's the situation in most of the U.S. right now. Go AARP! -- stronger than the American gun lobby...and possibly with more guns too.
