Westfield, NJ

Great To Make A Racket

Why the Best: Home of the NJ Table Tennis Club, one of the "hottest," most popular table tennis centers in the country. The Club is home-base to multiple Olympians and top competitors. Yet it's also a place where everybody in town goes, beginners on up - to learn, play, compete in tournaments, leagues, or just hang out and party.

Westfield, the quintessential suburban town, is not where you'd expect to find this little known ping pong mecca. The town has it all: beautiful tree-lined streets, well-kept Colonials and Victorians, terrific schools (ranked among the best in NJ), a thriving downtown, easy access to NYC, and a genuine passionate community spirit.

And then there's The Club -- smack in the middle of the downtown, barely noticed among the upscale shops and restaurants, occupying a huge 2nd floor walk-up warehouse space filled with row after row of professional grade table tennis tables and a handful of beaten up vending machines.

We love ping pong at Burbia. We sometimes watch it on ESPN2 at 3:00 a.m. on Tuesdays -- especially if we've already seen the Law & Order reruns that night. We wish we were Olympians. (Of course if we were really serious, we'd never call it, "ping pong." The sport is "table tennis." Ping Pong, we are often reminded, is a brand of table tennis equipment -- an antiquated one at that!) But because we love the game (along with 100s of millions of other people across the globe), and because the game doesn't get any better than in this lovely town that has embraced The Club, Westfield is without a doubt a Burbia Best Town....read about other towns
