Robert Redford. Actor-Director, Environmentalist. Hypocrite.

A lot of us have received a lot of messages over the years from Robert Redford -- from his Natural Resources Defense Council & other environmental groups. We've read his NY Times op-ed pieces imploring the government -- and us -- to be more environmentally sensitive. I don't disagree with a lot of what he's been telling us.

Thing is, here's something Mr. Redford can do himself to be the environmentalist and conservationist he says he is. Stop sending us your crappy Sundance Merchandise Catalogs in the mail every week. (I think 30 per calender quarter are enough.) I'm not interested in the overpriced oh-so-faux-rustic furniture and do-dads. More importantly, you could be saving the tons of national forests you so poignantly claim to value by simply ending the catalog mail spamming your for-profit company is doing. Want to conserve and protect our environmental resources? Do it yourself!

There, I've said it. One other thing. The other day I actually read the opening page of one of Redford's catalogs-- from last year -- his Christmas/Holiday catalog. It featured a pious, self-righteous personal statement by Mr. Redford bemoaning the materialism and commercialism of our world...then neatly (laughably) went on to ask us to buy his stuff. I mean, shoot, if you're going to buy crass materialistic crap, you might as well by mine and make me richer. (Again, Sundance is a for-profit merchandise busisness -- in contrast, e.g., to the Sundance Film Insitute which in structure at least is not.)

Here's the text of Redford's request. You almost have to love the guy for his (almost, but not quite) self-acknowledged hypocrisy. [Click on Pic to enlarge]

Again, Mr. Redford wants to make lots of money and sell crappy merchandise off of his & Sundance's name -- no different than plenty of celebs or business folks -- no real problem with that. Just spare us the BS and lose the Wizard of Oz, holier-than-thou I'm-better-than-you-higher-consciousness gloss.

Also seriously, please, stop sending us the catalogs. We've asked not to receive them. In fact we've already requested not to receive the "coming soon" 2009 catalogs. We don't read them (except that 1 time in the bathroom when we'd already read the shampoo bottle label...6 times). And, yea, we'd actually like to do our bit in preserving the environment. Somedoby told us that was a good thing...
