Turkeys In the Burbs ... And We Don't Mean Idiot Neighbors

Trend

Town after town, especially in the northeast (and especially in New Jersey) are complaining about the influx of turkeys -- the birds -- into their neighborhoods. (Surely it's not the schools.) The gobblers congest streets, poop all over lawns and, worst of all, make a lot of folks guilty about chopping off their heads and eating the birds for Thanksgiving. Now some apparently are getting aggressive.

Here's a vid clip of several aggressive turkeys in one NJ town. The action starts around 30-seconds in, but the clip is short and for anyone who wants to know the truth -- evidently turkeys like bicycles -- it may be worth watching the whole thing. It's definitely entertaining. (Do you like screams?) And as far as we can tell no one -- including a turkey -- was hurt during the filming of this clip.

Turkeys in Jersey

- submitted by Joe K on 10/08/2009

We have a flock of about 20 turkeys running around our organic gardens. I love seeing wildlife, but hopefully not when we are driving. Please don't feed the bears or any other wildlife. Feeding only makes them dependent on our food source. www.nowyoubeyou.com

Wild Turkeys on the Rise in USA

- submitted by Wine Country Babe on 10/08/2009

I live in a hood of nice homes, some are spread out with woods in between, and after being here 15 yrs, we now have several wild turkey flocks, large & small. They started appearing less than 5 yrs. ago. Some are 15 in number. People actually pull up to a stop sign & WAIT for the turkeys. (who is the bigger turkey here?) They will peck at your car & can be aggressive. They CAN FLY, so don't stop, slow down, honk the horn, but keep going. Don't be submissive to them!! They're wild animals, don't feed them, people!! If you're walking, carry an umbrella or cane. We must stop the Wild Turkey Terror! Happy Thanksgiving.

Island Turkeys

- submitted by Anonymous on 10/08/2009

You hit the nail! Staten Island's overrun with turkeys, and my sister has a phobia of them too. Everywhere I look, they always flock either the Midland or the Dongan Hills part of town. It's probably not as common as it is in New Jersey, but it's still not the best kind of living.

- submitted by Anonymous on 10/08/2009

And not just in the East...also in the far West: Spokane,Washinton. We have flocks of up to 20 in residential neighborhoods...Ever heard something on your skylight and had a turkey looking down at you????

Wild turkeys!

- submitted by Anonymous on 10/10/2009

I've had an agressive one stand in front of my car and then come to my driver's window and yelling at me, as if I had no right to be driving down the street. I quickly took off, that thing was mad! I live on the border of New York/New Jersey.

Are you losers kidding?!

- submitted by Anonymous on 10/10/2009

They're birds. Wild and in spite of what you suburban snobs think this is their home, not ours! I don't seem to remember ANYBODY being killed by a turkey or any other bird except the occational kick from an Ostrich or Emu. You haven't experienced fear until you come out in the morning to get your morning paper and have to contend with a hungry black bear or pissed off Wolverine digging through your trash, (and yes I HAVE). So what if there's a dozen poops on your prestine lawn! Jeez, who do you people think you are? I guess I should expect no less from the Tiffiny's Crowd who think missing a sale is a national crisis and requires an extra session at the family therapist.

- submitted by Anonymous on 10/10/2009

why can't we train the turkeys to do basic household chores. Instead of running into the street and getting hit by cars, they can park are cars and such. No?

Wild Turkeys

- submitted by Anonymous on 10/10/2009

I was attacked by 2 turkeys when I was 12. Those things scare the poop out of me now! I worked in Auburn, CA for 2 years and we had peacocks that hung out and would come right into the warehouse. They would also not get out of the way in the street. I was afraid of them because of the turkeys!!!

That woman acted like an

- submitted by Anonymous on 10/10/2009

That woman acted like an idiot, and the narrator was equally idiotic saying the turkeys were attacking the kid. They were curious about the BIKE, I didn't see any of them attacking anyone. They will follow you as they did the woman, but she was the fool with all of her screaming, continuing even after the turkeys went back near the bike. This was a ridiculous clip, made by a ridiculous person, about a ridiculous woman!

My first thought was that

- submitted by Anonymous on 10/10/2009

My first thought was that these people have no right to complain about wildlife encroachment, especially in the suburbs. These "white flight" homeowners in their "bedroom communities" are encroaching on what was previously natural habitat before they moved in with their bulldozers and pavers. How long will it be before we drive animals into the oceans and then complain because they interfere with our fishing???

Turkeys can be aggressive, unpleasant, assaultive creatives. Why do you think they named themselves turkeys? Huh? Lighten up, humor here, I think. Gobble gobble

Birds in Miami

- submitted by Anonymous on 10/12/2009

Oh my gosh...when my husband and I lived in Miami, we would frequent this park in order to study. Well, there were these huge birds there that would literally scare people out of the park cuz they'd walk towards you while flapping their wings! It was so freaky!! They were big and white...long legs, long necks, and very territorial apparently. In other news...please go vote for my daughters in the 2009 GAP Casting Call! Just go to http://family.go.com/gapcastingcall/entries/shannoncarrasco2/ You can vote once per day...let's make either of my cuties the new face of GAP!! Thanks in advance...and good luck to all the other cuties in the contest!

Turkey Hunting

- submitted by Anonymous on 10/12/2009

Turkey introduction programs have been so successful that most states have some kind of a limited turkey hunting season. It's usually a lottery drawing to get a permit by county/district/region of the state. Illegal taking or interfering of wildlife is usually a pretty stiff fine..$100 to $500 depending on the state and the Judge. Bottom line is, they are wild life that used to be found in every State so get used to it.

lmao...as long as no turkeys

Just think, Ben Franklin

- submitted by TACR on 10/12/2009

Just think, Ben Franklin wanted the Turkey as our National Bird! If that had happened then we would have been eating Eagle! Wake UP America Thanksgiving Dinner is staring you in the face, & saying take me I'm yours! It's better than $1.98 a lb at the store just a little more work but it will be fresh!

Wild Turkeys in California

Turkies Attacking in N.J.

- submitted by Pat on 10/12/2009

If people would quit encroching on territory of wildlife of all sorts, we wouldn't have these attacks ! But man has to take everything from everything in the wild in the name of Civilization and need ! The turkeys need space too ans I think they should build them a refuge somewhere that people aren't allowed to bother them !

turkeys

- submitted by Anonymous on 10/12/2009

We have wild turkeys in Roseville, CA. About 50 roosted on my roof, ate bits of nuts on the ground under the pecan trees. The droppings are good fertilizer up to a point - we reached saturation point within a day and then they took off on their own.

Wild Turkey Country

- submitted by Clark on 10/12/2009

Back in the late 50's wild turkeys were introduced back to Connecticut in Ltchfield CT. Now they are all over. I have had up to 40 nice mannered birds in my back yard here in New London. I feed them in the winter and they come when called. Not at problem at all.

They have had some issues with coyote and of course the turkey buzzards are back. What next?? Black bear of course.

I am happy they share their space with me!

Turkey Mites (ticks)

- submitted by Anonymous on 10/12/2009

Indiana, and a lot of other localities, have large populations of turkeys. The problem in southern Indiana are the turkey mites that the turkey's play host to. The mites are very small, hard to see, and have a hell of bite when they burrow into your skin. Since turkeys nest in trees at night, the mites are all around during and after the turkeys have left.

Turkeys

- submitted by Anonymous on 10/13/2009

I love you people that comment on the people that live in the Suburbs on how that this was the animals land and we bulldozed it to build our Big house. I wonder if any wildlife lived where your city was built? Well I enoy all the wildlife that come in my yard. If they poop or eat my plants and buses. They like my garden so I put a fence around it. I watch the deer eat and play and the fox chase the rabbits and squarrils. There's also coyotes and we have had bear. Much better then watching the animals in the city chase and kill each other or spread there crack and other junk. There was a time I could leave my house and garage unlocked and the keys in the car. But some of the animals from the city's started to move in. Now I have to lock my house and have an alarm system installed. They throw trash and other items on the side of the road. So I guess we all have our problems. The problem is thee is no hunting season on the animals from the city. Sad very sad.

- submitted by Anonymous on 10/13/2009

I live in the suburb and have a large farm in the country. I have probably 50+ wild turkeys in our back yard and never have a problem with them. They roost in the trees above the horse barns and eat leftover grain. They even can be called in to clean up spills. As to the farm ... we have raised wild turkeys from eggs that we found baling hay. They become just as domesticated as the common white ones. They come when called and get locked up at night to protect them from coyotes. Show a little kindness and you might find that they will return the favor.

We have a family of turkeys in the suburbs of Atlanta, namely Alpharetta/Milton. With large home lots they coexist and move from neighbor to neighbor with no problems.

Turkey Wilding in Kentucky TOO!

- submitted by Anonymous on 10/19/2009

There is an area in Paducah, Western KY called Forest Hills Housing Complex that is increasingly frequented by huge wild turkeys that walk around mainly between 7-8 AM as they own the place. They are tall and huge birds. What are people doing in other towns?

Turkeys are real animals

I live in suburban Connecticut and last week I was viciously gang raped by a small band of adolencent turkeys. They took turns having their way with me as they gobbled up my innocence. I know that this Thanksgiving, I will be having lamb.
